MANY BRIGHT THINGS- Many
Bright Friends US'2005 Gates Of Dawn GOD 010. Limited Vinyl press (500
copies/Yellow vinyl) $20
The LP opens with the twenty-second title track, followed by the twenty-minute
centerpiece: The Paul Butterfield Band's John Coltrane/Ravi Shankar-inspired
masterpiece, "East West."Across its twenty minutes and forty-four
seconds no fewer that five guitarists step into the center ring with
solos that begin with Larry Demyer (Windopane) and include back-to-back
fiery electric sermons by Nick Saloman (Bevis Frond) and Al Simones.
Add to all of that Florida blues harpist, Michael "Byrd" Birocco
channeling the late Paul Butterfield and you are in for a wild ride. "The
Silver Witch" is written and performed by Alisha Sufit (Magic Carpet)
accompanied by Frank DeFina Alisha's voice reminds us of our dreams of
angels. A tamboura drone and tabla accompaniment are the foundation for "Minor
Parade for 18 Strings" and a duet between Stan Denski's acoustic
12-string Guild guitar and Paul Major's lead electric. Stan Denski & Larry
Demyer play guitars, David Clough (Zero Boys) adds bass and Lon Paul
(Marmoset) adds percussion, all of which form the ground upon which Jello
Biafra (The Dead Kennedys) improvises observations on "rare psychedelic
music" on "I Am Not A Collector Potato!" |

FENNER, LELAND & O'BRIEN Somewhere,
Someday, Somehow US '97 LP SOLD
OUT!Unknown LP in a very limited reissue from1969 (pressed then in only150 copies). This was originally issued on the RPC Vanity label, also home of Rubber Memory. A stunning LP filled with that broken dreamer vibe, where youthful idealism and naivete met the cold facts of Vietnam and the government's "true intentions". The resulting sound is somewhat akin to some of Bryan MacLean's work with LOVE and Crosby's "Wooden Ships", yet this music is all their own. Some excellent fuzz on a couple tracks, and hailed by all who have heard it. Original copies sell for seriously lofty amounts! |

Add to all of that Florida blues harpist, Michael "Byrd" Birocco channeling the late Paul Butterfield and you are in for a wild ride. "The Silver Witch" is written and performed by Alisha Sufit (Magic Carpet) accompanied by Frank DeFina on a beautiful Stephen Gilchrist F-5 mandolin. If this was an LP we think that this song would open the second side of the vinyl as nicely as "Within You Without You" opened side two of Sgt. Pepper. Alisha's voice reminds us of our dreams of angels. A tamboura drone and tabla accompaniment are the foundation for "Minor Parade for 18 Strings" and a duet between Stan Denski's acoustic 12-string Guild guitar and Paul Major's lead electric. TIRILL Title: A Dance With the Shadows Label: WILD PLACES Format: CD Price: $15.00 Catalog #: WILD 013CD " The debut solo CD from Tirill Mohn, formerly of renowned Norwegian folk/prog group, White Willow. A truly stunning recording full of light and shadow, from sun gilded meadows to firelight dancing off the trees at the deep heart of the darkened forest. At once contemporary and ancient, earthy and grounded and ethereal and otherworldly, joyous and sorrowful, deeply emotional and stirringly cerebral. Tirill's acoustic guitar work is classical in influence as well as rooted in folk musics and Scandinavian melodies, at times recalling some of the playing of Duncan Browne and Nick Drake. Her violin work is sublime and lyrical and her voice is nothing short of angelic. (think a Nordic Linda Perhacs even) She is backed by some amazing musicians making this CD truly an experience, whilst incorporating neo classical, folk, progressive and even gothic elements she has created a lovely netherworld all it's own." |

ASIA Same/Armed To The Teeth WILD
001 US '93 CD $15No relation to the UK/Geffen band with Howe, Wetton et al--this is the US band that predates them. Hailing from North Dakota and having evolved from the band White Wing, they play a dynamic progressive hard rock ala Captain Beyond, early Uriah Heep, and Deep Purple, featuring dual guitars and mellotron. Driving and complex at the same time, this compiles their two private-press LPs from '78 and '80 onto a single CD. With extensive liner notes from guitarist/ leader Mike Coates. Stunning! |

DEVIL DOLL Sacrilege
Of Fatal Arms RCD 1011 IT
'94 CD $15Termed a "soundtrack", this takes the main themes of "Sacrilegium" and expands upon them to create an entirely new 70+ minute live/studio rendering which goes beyond almost anything one could possibly imagine. With lots of new material and arrangements, this has about ten times the power and emotiveness of the original, which is ABSOLUTELY stunning in its own right! That 70+ minute time mentioned above is all one gloriously majestic suite! |
||
DEVIL DOLL Dies Irae HG
10 IT '96 CD $18Not an official Renaissance/Wild Places issue, this amazing Hurdy Gurdy release from Italy still deserves to be mentioned here. "Dies Irae" is the latest chapter in the ever-unfolding and intriguing music of Mr. Doctor and Devil Doll. This piece had originally been completed a couple of years earlier but during the mixing and mastering, the studio was mysteriously engulfed in flames. The original tapes all perished in the blaze and those in attendance narrowly escaped. The music was subsequently rerecorded from scratch and an epic opus emerged via a 45-minute suite, again one long track. Just prior to its release, later masters were discovered which include variances on the original and, consequently, a hidden "end piece" some 23 minutes after the suite ends was appended. Perhaps the "curse" is finally over! |
